GUARDA - data acquisition system

Flight data recording is a generally accepted aviation standard recommended by FAA, EASA, and Polish Civil Aviation Authority. It is an inseparable element in improving safety for communication aircraft. Everyone has heard at least once that when an accident occurs, “black boxes” are sought. The basis for the operation of these devices is the recording of flight parameters measured with the use of sensors, and then recording them on a suitable medium. These devices can be large and heavy, therefore it was in vain to look for advanced solutions dedicated to parachuting that would allow recording such parameters as the spatial orientation angles of the parachuter during the jump, as well as accelerations acting during the opening of the canopy or touchdown.

We are pleased to present the GUARDA data acquisition system, which was created based on our many years of experience in the design of microcomputer devices and our aviation experience. This unique device with low weight allows you to record key flight parameters, and performs the functions of an emergency locator, but also when connected to the transmission module, it allows for ongoing communication with the instructor's station.

The number of recorded parameters and the use of high-quality sensors is not everything that distinguishes us. Especially, we have created software that will allow you to quickly and easily analyze the registered flight.
What's all of this for? Thanks to the registration of parameters, you will be able to objectively:

  • evaluate the training progress
  • document each flight (the so-called digital flight book approved by the Civil Aviation Authority)
  • conclude the mistakes made
  • share your experience with others

Why is it worth using the GUARDA data acquisition system?

Flight recording is an important element in the training methodology to avoid the paradox of fishing. After all, a caught fish grows with the repetition of the tale .... Similarly in aviation training, our memory can be unreliable and susceptible to emotions that accompany it. One way to draw the correct conclusions is to objectively record flight parameters. What distinguishes our product is the list of recorded parameters, including:

  • barometric altitude
  • vertical speed
  • geolocation
  • spatial orientation angles
  • angular velocities
  • accelerations acting on the recorder

Skydiving and paragliding are sports that involve a lot of risks. The number of aviation incidents involving paratroopers and paraglider pilots proves that accidents are an inseparable aspect of their practice. Each of the accidents has a cause or a number of them, but only thanks to reliable registration is it possible to understand the circumstances and the analysis of the full course of the flight. We tested our recorder for use as the so-called “black box”. Its resistance to environmental conditions means that it can successfully record even the most dangerous events during parachute jumps and paragliding flights. Unfortunately, sometimes it may turn out to be the only source of information on why the accident happened...

With all this in mind, we have equipped our recorder with the GSM locator functions... It is enough to send an SMS to the locator's number (if it is within the GSM network) and receive feedback on its geolocation. Thanks to this, you can shorten the time needed to reach the victim by the time necessary for his search!

Usually, the size of the device increases with the number of functions offered by it, after all, the larger the device, the better ...

Not when the goal is to securely record skydiving or paragliding. The large size of the recorder reduces the comfort during the flight, as well as establishes the potential risk that the recorder may cause additional injuries during an accident. So the ideal recorder from a security point of view should record everything and be smaller than a grain of sand ... but how to read data from it?

Bearing in mind the design constraints, instructors' opinions, and functional requirements, we have created a device with the following dimensions:

- 92 x 70 x 12 [mm],

and weight:

- 120 [g]

- 120 [g]... and you can charge and read data using a USB-C cable.

Formation jumping is one of the most spectacular forms of parachuting. If you train in a group, the risk of accidents increases because you can collide with someone else in midair. Our software allows you to visualize and analyze the flight course for several registrations at the same time. Thanks to this, you will be able to estimate how far the members of the formation were at the moment, and if someone makes a mistake or incorrectly completes the task, you will know how to correct it in the future. It is an ideal solution for pre- and post-flight briefings.

Sometimes it is too late to evaluate the behavior of the skydiver after the flight. The GSM network can be unreliable at higher altitudes, so it cannot always be used for ongoing flight supervision. For this reason, we have created a version of the GUARDA-TE recorder, which has been expanded with a transmission module. Thanks to this, you will be able to send data live from the recorder to the instructor’s station, and on the ground, it will be possible to analyze the jump and evaluate e.g. distance separation between jumpers. The dimensions of the set have not changed significantly... To achieve large transmission ranges, however, we used an external, flexible antenna with high gain.

Data analysis can be a chore. Especially when you use equipment that is difficult to use and not adapted to the realities of the airport. Additionally, incorrectly performed data interpretation may lead to wrong conclusions. All of this can lead to the opposite effect, despite the goal of improving safety.

With our software, however, this is a thing of the past. Working with a large group of instructors and experienced flight test engineers, we have developed software that will allow you to better understand the course of the recorded flight. In addition to the traditional visualization of the trajectory on the map, a few clicks will separate you from visualizing flight parameters graphs as a function of time. Traditional pilot-navigational instruments will facilitate the quantitative analysis of the recorded parameters, and if this is not enough in your application, you will always be able to easily export the data to formats such as * .csv or * .igc

The use of the GUARDA recorder is not only about parachuting or paragliding. We have successfully used it to record parameters in other facilities, including for the evaluation of overloads acting on the dummy in the research of new types of security for the construction industry. We also closely cooperate with the young, ambitious SuperCluster team on the mission of the stratospheric balloon. The GUARDA data logger has recorded data at an altitude of 31km! If you only need it, it will support you in registering data from your application.

Our recorder works with other elements of the PSSP-01 system. You can recreate a jump recorded with the use of GUARDA recorder in virtual reality, and if you use the instructor station in the version with the data transmission module, you will be able to supervise real-life flight operations on a daily basis!

Do you need additional functions in the recorder? Are you interested in specific measurements? Do you want to do flight tests? Contact us and we will try to help you. We offer individual orders:

  • conducting flight tests and assessing the properties of parachutes and paragliders,
  • the possibility of expanding the measurement system and carrying out measurements by the customer's needs,
  • consulting regarding flight tests and supervision throughout tests.
